Kidiavai Blends Sports and Empowerment in New Women’s Program in Trans Nzoia

Hospital Ward aspiring Member of County Assembly in Trans Nzoia, Hawkings Kidiavai, has launched a women’s football tournament aimed at empowering women socially and economically while nurturing grassroots talent in the region.

Speaking during the launch, Kidiavai said the initiative is more than just a sporting event, describing it as a comprehensive empowerment program focused on mentorship, awareness, and inclusion of women in community development.

“This is not just a tournament—it is an empowerment program. Our women have a lot of hidden talent, and we want to bring them together, nurture their abilities, and make them feel valued,” he said.

In a unique approach that sets the tournament apart, all participating teams will receive equal rewards regardless of their final standings.

Each team will be awarded Sh 40,000 irrespectiveof the position, reinforcing the message that every participant is a winner.

“There is no loser here. Whether a team finishes first or last, everyone benefits. This is about empowerment, not competition,” Kidiavai added.

In addition to the cash rewards, teams will receive full uniform kits and five footballs to support continued participation in women’s sports. Individual excellence will also be recognized, with awards for top scorers, best players, and best goalkeepers, each receiving sh 5000.

The women’s empowerment initiative also includes the distribution of sanitary towels and essential hygiene products, addressing key challenges affecting women and girls in the community.

Kidiavai emphasized that the program is community-driven and not politically motivated, with a strong focus on uplifting women and strengthening social cohesion.

“We want every woman to feel part and parcel of the community. We are here to stand with them and walk with them,” he said.

Looking ahead, the MCA aspirant revealed plans to expand the initiative through additional empowerment programs.

A second tournament is scheduled for December and will incorporate training in poultry farming to promote economic independence among women.

“We have many projects lined up for women, including support for women’s groups. This is not a one-time event—we are committed to continuous empowerment,” he noted.

Kidiavai also indicated that similar initiatives targeting men and youth will follow, explaining that the current focus on women is a strategic step towards rebuilding and revitalizing community structures, including dormant women’s football teams.

The programme is expected to grow into a broader community empowerment movement, positioning women at the center of social and economic transformation in Hospital Ward and across Trans Nzoia County.
