Doctors at Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kitale successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a massive salivary gland tumor from a patient who had nearly lost hope after seeking treatment in several places.
The patient, Josephine Nasimiyu, had severe swelling on one side of her face and neck. Further diagnostic tests, including an ultrasound and other examinations, revealed the need for immediate admission and surgical intervention.
“The patient had no financial means to pay for her treatment. In response, the hospital administration facilitated a waiver of all medical charges, enabling her to undergo the necessary tests and procedures without financial burden,” said Jedida Wamalwa, the medical superintendent
Josephine, who is recovering well and remains in stable condition, expressed gratitude, saying she felt that God had answered her prayers through a successful surgery. She added that she feels relieved after having lost hope following visits to several health facilities without success.
The surgery was led by Dr. Jonathan Kiprop, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) who explained that the patient arrived with an enormous tumor originating from the salivary gland and extending from the parotid region into the neck.
“When we examined her, we found a very large mass measuring approximately 18 centimeters at its widest point. She had visited many health facilities before and was almost losing hope, but we knew there was something we could do,” said Dr. Kiprop.
He noted that while the procedure was highly complex, it was not the first of its kind at the facility. The hospital has previously conducted major surgeries involving neck masses and reconstructive procedures, including those carried out during a recent surgical camp that attracted patients from across the region.

The hospital administrator Rose Wepukhulu Wangila said the successful operation demonstrates the facility’s growing capacity to handle specialized and complicated medical cases.
“This surgery shows that we have the expertise, equipment and personnel required to manage serious conditions such as tumors. We encourage patients not to remain at home suffering but to seek medical attention because we have qualified professionals ready to help,” said Ms wangila.
The administrator highlighted ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery through adequate staffing, the recruitment of specialized medical personnel and ensuring a consistent supply of medicines.
Hospital officials praised the County Government of Trans Nzoia under the leadership of Governor George Natembeya for its continued support of healthcare services, particularly through investments that have strengthened the capacity of Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The successful surgery adds to a growing list of specialized procedures being performed at the hospital, reinforcing its role as a key referral facility serving patients not only from Trans Nzoia County but also from neighboring counties such as West Pokot and beyond.
