Western Opposition Leaders Endorse Edwin Sifuna to Challenge Ruto in 2027

Senior opposition leaders from Western Kenya have endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as their preferred candidate to lead a united opposition against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

The leaders made the declaration during the Linda Mwananchi tour in Trans Nzoia County, where they described Sifuna as the most suitable consensus candidate capable of uniting the opposition and mounting a formidable challenge against President Ruto.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya said he had shelved his own presidential ambitions to support Sifuna, arguing that unseating President Ruto was a bigger priority than individual political interests.

“My brother, I am backing your bid because we can only have one flagbearer. You have my blessings. Don’t let us down,” Natembeya said.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale also declared his support, saying he would rally leaders from the Western region behind Sifuna’s presidential bid.

“Sifuna is the incarnation of Masinde Muliro and Kijana Wamalwa. He is the best compromise candidate to challenge Ruto,” Khalwale said.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi revealed that the opposition would soon unveil a new political party to serve as its vehicle for the 2027 elections.

“ODM chased us from the party for standing our ground on matters affecting the common mwananchi. We will form a new party to accommodate the Linda Mwananchi movement,” Osotsi said.

Siaya Governor James Orengo described Sifuna as a leader capable of transforming the country, while accusing President Ruto’s administration of pursuing policies that had worsened the country’s economic situation.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino criticised President Ruto, accusing him of failing to fulfil the promises he made to Kenyans during the 2022 election campaign.

The endorsement comes as opposition leaders intensify consultations aimed at forming a united political front ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Sifuna increasingly emerging as a key figure in the coalition’s succession plans.

The opposition team that toured Trans Nzoia County is expected to continue its Western Kenya mobilisation on Sunday with a Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma County, where leaders are expected to outline their plans for building a united coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
