Trans Nzoia security agencies have launched a manhunt for suspected financiers of violence, with County Commander Riko Ngare warning that those bankrolling criminal activities will not escape arrest.
Ngare said police were tracing mobile money transactions allegedly used to fund criminal activities and mobilise young people to cause chaos in the region.
He said security operations conducted over the past two to three days had targeted individuals suspected of planning attacks, financing violence and recruiting young people into criminal networks.
“We are targeting those planning attacks, financing criminal activities and mobilising young people. Whether you are providing money or recruiting people to cause chaos, we will pursue you,” Ngare said.
The commander said investigators were following M-Pesa transactions to identify individuals suspected of funding the activities, adding that those receiving the money could help police uncover the wider networks behind the violence.
Night operations had also led to the recovery of electronic devices, mobile phones and motorcycles suspected to be linked to criminal activities.
Ngare said the operation would continue until those responsible were brought to justice and security restored in the affected areas.
He warned politicians and other individuals against using money to lure young people into violence, saying those involved risked serious legal consequences.
“We want to tell young people not to allow themselves to be used for political or other interests in exchange for small amounts of money to cause chaos,” he said.
Ngare said investigations were ongoing to establish the motives of the suspected financiers and identify others involved in the criminal networks.
The commander’s remarks also cited figures of 76 people killed, 45 suspects taken to a police station and 31 additional arrests. These figures require verification before publication.
