The National Government has taken over the completion of the remaining works at the Muliro Modern Market located at the Kitale bus terminus in Trans Nzoia County.
The handover was carried out by a Trans Nzoia County Government team led by County Secretary Truphosa Amere, County Executive Committee (CEC) Members for Lands and Urban Planning Pius Gumo, and CEC Member for Trade Patrick Gacheru.
According to county officials, the market facility is 95 per cent complete, with the County Government having invested approximately Sh800 million in its construction.
The remaining five per cent of the works will now be undertaken by the National Government.
“We are handing over the project with an agreement that the National Government will help us complete the remaining works within 30 days,” said Ms Amere during the handover ceremony.
Deputy Director at the State Department for Housing and urban development Moses Odour said the final phase of construction will mainly focus on installation and finishing works.
“These include plumbing, electrification, painting, terrazzo flooring, and general repairs to ensure the facility is fully operational,” said Mr. Oduor.
Once completed, the Muliro Modern Market will host modern trading facilities, including stalls, Sacco offices, display areas, storage rooms, eight kitchens and a designated boda boda parking area.
The market will also feature a playground, CCTV surveillance, civil works, and improved lighting to enhance security and accessibility for traders and customers.
Mr Odour noted that the installations are critical to making the market functional and ready for occupation by traders, adding that the National Government is committed to ensuring the project is completed within the agreed timeline.
Mr Gumo said the county government has already initiated a public participation process to guide the allocation of trading spaces once the market is officially opened.
“The ministry is currently conducting public participation to determine which traders will be allocated spaces in the market after completion,” said Mr Gumo.
The Muliro Modern Market is expected to decongest Kitale town, provide a modern trading environment, and boost local economic activities once it becomes operational.
