Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has challenged security agencies to demonstrate political neutrality during Saturday’s Linda Mwananchi rally, questioning whether opposition supporters will receive the same level of protection accorded to government-backed political events.
Speaking during a meeting with aspiring leaders ahead of the rally, Natembeya said organisers had formally notified security agencies about the event and expected adequate security to guarantee the safety of participants. He, however, expressed concern over what he described as unequal treatment of opposition political gatherings.
“The Constitution guarantees every Kenyan the freedom to assemble and express their views peacefully. Security officers should protect everyone equally because the law does not discriminate based on political affiliation,” Natembeya said.
The governor’s remarks come as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders prepare for a political tour of Trans Nzoia on Saturday, with rallies planned in Sibanga and Kitale.
Natembeya urged residents not to be intimidated from attending the gathering, saying peaceful political participation is a constitutional right that must be protected regardless of political affiliation.
He also appealed to supporters to reject violence and avoid carrying weapons, insisting the meeting was intended to provide a platform for citizens to hear different political viewpoints.
“If you come, come with an open mind and with the intention of listening. Let everyone express their views freely because that is the essence of democracy. We want a peaceful meeting where people listen to different opinions and return home safely after the rally,” he said.
The governor warned against individuals seeking to disrupt the event, urging residents not to allow themselves to be used to incite violence.
“Do not allow anyone to use you to cause chaos. This meeting is about ideas, not violence. We want every person to feel safe enough to attend, listen and return home in peace,” Natembeya added.
He further renewed his call for equitable distribution of national resources, arguing that development projects and government services should benefit all regions irrespective of voting patterns.
According to the organisers’ programme, supporters will gather at Moi’s Bridge before escorting Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders in a convoy through Sibanga to Kitale, where the main public rally will be held.
The Trans Nzoia event will be followed by another Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma on Sunday as the opposition movement steps up mobilisation activities across Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
