People’s Renaissance Movement (PM) Party leader Caleb Amisi has announced plans to petition the United Nations over the size and cost of President William Ruto’s delegation to the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
Amisi, the Saboti MP, accused the government of spending taxpayers’ money to ferry what he called “joyriders” to the United States, questioning the economic value of the expenditure.
“We will be launching a formal complaint as a party to the UN to sanction the Kenyan government for wasting resources on the trip,” Amisi said.
His remarks come amid scrutiny over the size of Kenya’s delegation to the UNGA, where Ruto delivered Kenya’s national statement on September 23.
The UN’s official programme shows that the 81st General Assembly high-level general debate ran from September 22 to September 28 at the UN headquarters in New York.
At least seven Cabinet Secretaries were among those accompanying Ruto, according to reports, fuelling questions over the size of the delegation and the cost to taxpayers.
Amisi said PM would take the complaint to the international body as part of its push for greater accountability over public expenditure on foreign travel.
“We will be launching a formal complaint as a party to the UN to sanction the Kenyan government for wasting resources on the trip,” he said.
The government has, however, pointed to the diplomatic and economic engagements conducted during the New York visit as justification for the delegation.
Among the reported outcomes was a Kenya-UNIDO Country Partnership Programme for 2026–2030, which is expected to mobilise investment for industrialisation, technology transfer, manufacturing and job creation.
The debate therefore centres on the cost and composition of Kenya’s UNGA delegation against the diplomatic, investment and partnership outcomes secured during the high-level week.
The UN says the General Assembly’s high-level week brings together heads of state, governments and ministers to address global challenges and advance cooperation on peace, security and sustainable development.
