Sibanga FC Beats Kapsara FC 2–1 to Lift Cherang’any Unity Cup in Dramatic Final

Sibanga FC staged a dramatic comeback from a goal down to defeat Kapsara FC 2–1 and lift the Cherang’any Unity Cup, in a tense final defined by late equaliser drama, a disallowed extra-time goal, and a decisive winner.

Kapsara FC struck first and controlled much of the opening stages before Sibanga responded in the dying minutes of the first half with a crucial equaliser that shifted momentum heading into the break.

The second half and extra time produced even more intensity, with Sibanga briefly thinking they had taken the lead only for their goal to be ruled out for offside. They, however, responded almost immediately, scoring the winning goal minutes later to complete a memorable turnaround.

The match, played at Zion Transcend Stadium in Cherang’any, attracted large crowds and senior national leaders, with Mining Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho serving as the chief guest.

The tournament was sponsored by Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who said the initiative formed part of a broader peace and youth empowerment programme aimed at strengthening unity and addressing insecurity through sport.

“This tournament is not just about football, but about uniting our youth, building peace, and steering them towards productive livelihoods. We remain committed to supporting grassroots sports and ensuring our young people are engaged, empowered, and protected from criminal influence,” Murkomen said.

He confirmed a Sh1 million reward for the winning team as part of government support for grassroots sports development.

Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang praised the tournament, noting that it was instrumental in promoting unity and nurturing young talent in the region.

Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi also commended the initiative, saying sports remain a powerful tool for peacebuilding and youth empowerment.

Former Cherang’any MP Wesley Korir said the tournament was crucial in identifying and nurturing emerging football talent, adding that such platforms are key to developing future professional players.

The Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah, praised the organization of the tournament and pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to expand grassroots sports development across the country.

In a gesture of goodwill, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat Dr. Susan Nakhumicha promised to host a luncheon for both teams in recognition of their performance, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Organizers said the Cherang’any Unity Cup will be held annually to further promote peace, unity, and youth development through sport across the region.
