Contractors undertaking projects in Trans Nzoia County have strongly criticized claims by Senator Allan Chesang that the county government has delivered zero development since Governor George Natembeya assumed office.
The contractors termed the remarks, which were made by the senator during a radio talk show, misleading and dismissive of the work undertaken by local contractors across the county.
Speaking on behalf of the contractors, their secretary, Peter Ouma, said the statement was an insult not only to the county administration but also to contractors who have successfully implemented numerous development projects under Governor Natembeya’s leadership.
“If the senator says there is zero development in Trans Nzoia, then he is implying that contractors have done no work at all. We have executed projects across various sectors, and residents can clearly see the results on the ground,” said Ouma.
He noted that the Natembeya administration has awarded and supervised several projects, creating employment opportunities and improving service delivery to residents.
The contractors’ chairman, Nicholas Barasa, echoed the sentiments, saying development projects are visible in different parts of the county and should not be disregarded for political reasons.
“We are the people implementing these projects. Roads have been improved, public facilities have been constructed, and several other projects have been completed. It is therefore unfair to claim that nothing has been done,” Barasa said.
Another contractor, Jenny Wasike, said local contractors have worked closely with the county government to ensure projects are completed to the required standards.
“We have invested our time, resources, and expertise in delivering these projects. Statements suggesting there is no development demoralize contractors and ignore the reality on the ground,” she said.
Violet Mwale, a vegetable supplier, also defended the county government’s development record, arguing that many residents have directly benefited from projects initiated by the current administration.
Johnstone Ngure said development should not be viewed through a political lens, adding that residents are in a better position to judge the impact of projects implemented in their communities.
The contractors challenged Senator Chesang to tour various projects undertaken by the county government before drawing conclusions about the status of development in Trans Nzoia.
Youthful contractor Fred Nyongesa urged political leaders to acknowledge achievements where progress has been made noting its wrong to mislead the public.
