National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has pledged to intervene in addressing critical infrastructural and staffing challenges facing St Francis Kolongolo Girls Secondary School in Kwanza Constituency.
Speaking during the commissioning of a modern classroom block constructed at a cost of Ksh 20 million under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), Wetang’ula noted that while Kenya has recruited enough teachers, disparities in deployment continue to disadvantage some schools.
“We have enough teachers in this country, but the problem is distribution. Schools like Kolongolo are suffering while others have excess staff. This must be corrected,” he said.
The Speaker revealed that St Francis Kolongolo Girls is currently facing a shortage of 28 teachers, despite its steadily growing student population and strong academic performance in the region. He called for urgent rationalization of teacher deployment to ensure fairness and efficiency across all public schools.
Wetang’ula further pledged continued support for the school’s infrastructure development, announcing plans to facilitate the construction of a modern multipurpose hall aimed at expanding both academic and co-curricular facilities.
He also committed to personally spearhead a fundraising drive to support the project, following an appeal by the school principal, Hellen Wanyonyi, who highlighted that students currently take meals in open spaces due to lack of adequate dining facilities.
“We will ensure this school gets a multipurpose hall. I will also lead a funds drive to make this a reality because our children should not be eating outside,” Wetang’ula said.
In attendance, Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change, Environment and Forestry Deborah Barasa pledged support for environmental conservation initiatives at the school, including afforestation and climate awareness programmes as part of broader school-based climate action efforts.
Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Susan Nakhumicha, also announced plans to organize a parliamentary visit for students from the institution, where they will be hosted by the Speaker to inspire leadership aspirations among learners.
“This will be an opportunity for the girls to visit Parliament and be motivated to dream big, as they have what it takes to be leaders of tomorrow,” she said.
St Francis Kolongolo Girls Secondary School emerged as the best-performing school in Kwanza Sub-County in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, posting a mean score of 7.100 (C+), an improvement from 6.9 in the previous year.
