Iteso Community Pushes for Unity, Resettlement, and Cultural Preservation

Representatives of the Iteso community in Trans Nzoia convened at the Iteso Leaders’ Conference to establish a shared agenda on unity, resettlement, and socio-economic empowerment.

The conference also marked the inauguration of elected Iteso leaders; a move participants said would enhance coordination and accountability within the community’s leadership structures.

The Iteso Kenya Chapter spokesperson and Teso North MP, Oka Kaunya, reiterated the need to address historical marginalization, noting that development cannot be achieved without deliberate policy interventions.

There is a need for cohesive leadership and collective advocacy to address the long-standing challenges affecting our community, which has long suffered marginalization,” said Mr. Kaunya at the forum held at Kitale National Polytechnic.

Busia County Deputy Speaker Ronald Ochalu echoed the call, urging community leaders to prioritize peace, inclusion, and the development agenda of the community in the cosmopolitan county.

“Your united voice will guarantee a better bargaining ground even as you coexist with other communities in Trans Nzoia. You have to come out and claim what you deserve,” said Mr. Ochalu.

Trans Nzoia Chief Officer for Education & Vocational Training, Kennedy Etyang, highlighted the importance of structured engagement with both county and national governments, particularly on issues of resettlement and equitable access to public services.

“There are many opportunities at both the national and county governments, and all we require is to ensure that we have representation at all levels so that our interests can be catered for,” said Mr. Etyang.

A key resolution of the meeting was the renewed call for the full implementation of the Mabanga Peace Accord in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties, which leaders said remains critical for sustaining peace and stability in the region.

Mr. Kaunya noted that ethnic mobilization aimed at empowerment should not be misconstrued as tribalism, but rather seen as a legitimate means of addressing inequality and promoting development.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya pledged to support integration and peaceful coexistence among communities, including the Iteso, saying his administration is addressing any historical injustices they might have faced.

“I welcome your plans to establish a Teso Cultural Centre. Once you are ready, we will provide a space at the Kitale Museum to preserve the community’s heritage and promote cultural tourism,” said Governor Natembeya.

Trans Nzoia Assembly Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale emphasized that it is prudent for communities that feel marginalized to come together and forge a united front, as collective action is essential for effectively advancing their social, economic, and political interests.

“Sometimes marginalized communities hesitate to caucus because they fear being labeled as engaging in tribalism, but that is not the case. Caucusing is a legitimate and necessary way for communities to organize, advocate for their interests, and address historical inequalities,” said Mr. Mwale.
