Trans Nzoia Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi has attributed the increasing number of single mothers in the county to a growing trend of men abandoning parental responsibilities.
Speaking during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) forum in Saboti, Siyoi said many women find themselves raising children alone after being misled by men who promise marriage but disappear after pregnancy.
“I want to urge men who are not ready to take up the responsibilities of husbands and fathers not to put women in the family way,” she said.
The Woman Representative also raised concern over what she described as a worrying rise in cases of sexual defilement targeting schoolgirls.
“Parents and guardians should ensure that young girls are safeguarded against predatory men,” Siyoi noted.
She called on law enforcement agencies to intensify action against perpetrators, insisting that offenders must face the full force of the law.
“Young girls have a right to pursue their education dreams until they attain the maturity needed to make personal choices about marriage,” she added.
Siyoi reaffirmed her commitment to delivering on her mandate through affirmative action programmes, highlighting ongoing support initiatives in the county.
“I have managed to distribute tents to several community groups and rolled out a scholarship and bursary programme for needy students, as well as wheelchairs for people living with disabilities,” she said.
