Wamalwa Kijana Hospital expands renal, critical-care services

Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital has expanded access to specialised healthcare in Trans Nzoia with a 13-bed renal unit offering dialysis and a five-bed intensive care unit (ICU) for critically ill patients.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Zaietuni Akajoroit said the renal unit is fully operational and currently serving seven dialysis patients.

“The renal unit has 13 beds which are fully functional. And so far we have seven patients who are getting dialysis from the facility,” Dr. Akajoroit said.

The unit can handle up to 26 dialysis patients per day, operating from Monday to Saturday, giving it a potential capacity of about 156 dialysis sessions a week.

Dr. Akajoroiturged residents requiring regular dialysis to use the facility, saying the service provides a local option for patients who would otherwise seek treatment outside the county.

The hospital has also established a five-bed ICU to provide critical care to patients requiring close monitoring and specialised treatment.

Beyond renal and critical care, the hospital offers outpatient and specialised clinics, including surgery, urology, plastic surgery, diabetes and hypertension services.

“We are offering comprehensive services from the outpatient clinics, specialised clinics such as surgery, urology, plastic surgery, diabetes and hypertension,” Dr. Akajoroit said.

The facility also provides pharmacy, laboratory and radiology services, including CT scans, X-rays and ultrasound.

Its inpatient services include maternity, male and female medical wards, surgical wards, a newborn unit and an amenity ward.

Dr. Akajoroit said the hospital has medicines and non-pharmaceutical supplies, although patients may occasionally be required to obtain highly specialised items that are unavailable at the facility.

He said hospital management would intervene whenever essential medicines or supplies were unavailable.

“If anything is missing, the management of the hospital will ensure that everything is available for the patients,” Dr. Akajoroit
said.

He also said the hospital serves patients without regard to their political affiliations, stressing that access to healthcare should not be determined by politics.

The expansion of renal and critical-care services is expected to increase access to specialised treatment in Trans Nzoia and reduce referrals for patients who can be managed locally.
