Central Primary School Kitale: A Benchmark for Holistic Education

Central Primary School in Kitale Town is setting a benchmark for holistic education, nurturing learners not only academically but also socially and through co-curricular activities.

The school’s approach integrates classroom learning, talent development, and life skills, preparing students to thrive in all aspects of life.

Serving a largely underprivileged population from nearby informal settlements, Central Primary School Kitale has become a beacon of opportunity for vulnerable children.

With a total enrollment of 3,296 learners—excluding 300 in Early Childhood Development (ECD)—the school ensures that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education.

The head of the institution, Nichlas Rono, emphasizes that the school’s focus extends beyond grades.

“Every learner has unique potential, and we strive to nurture that. We want our children to leave this school not only with knowledge but with confidence, resilience, and the ability to pursue their dreams,” said Mr. Rono.

A key pillar of the school’s holistic approach is talent development. The school has established a vibrant talent centre, allowing students to explore sports, arts, and other skills beyond the classroom.

This investment has already yielded impressive results, particularly in sports. The schoo became East football champions last year, marking a historic achievement.

“Winning the championship was a proud moment for our school. It shows that academic and co-curricular success can go hand in hand. Our students are not just learners; they are achievers,” he said.

Football has also become a pathway to educational opportunities. Several students have gained placement in top-tier secondary schools based on their sporting skills.

“Through football, we are opening doors for our learners. Talent is becoming a pathway to opportunity, just like academics. We have students who might never have accessed national schools if not for their skills on the pitch,” said Mr. Rono.

Alongside talent development, the school has implemented strong academic support systems. Structured timetables, remedial lessons, and time management strategies enable learners to balance academics with co-curricular activities while building discipline and teamwork.

“We monitor each child closely. If a student is struggling in a subject, we provide extra help. We ensure no child is left behind because we believe every learner deserves a chance to succeed,” he said.

The school’s success is the result of collaboration among the Board of Management, teachers, Parents’ Association, and supportive parents, with CDF funding playing a crucial role.

“Our parents and the community are our backbone. When we work together, the results are remarkable. The success of our learners belongs to all of us,” said Mr. Rono.

The school’s commitment to holistic education is reflected in its 2026 CBC results, where all 384 candidates successfully transitioned to secondary school. The top three learners scored an impressive 70 out of 72 points.

“Seeing our students achieve these results is incredibly rewarding. It proves that hard work, guidance, and nurturing the whole child pay off,” he said.

A total of 222 students secured admission to national schools, while nine others gained placement based on their football talent, bringing the total to 231. The remaining students joined extra-county schools, primarily due to financial constraints.

Established in 1948 in Bondeni, Central Primary School Kitale has a long-standing tradition of nurturing well-rounded learners who excel academically, socially, and in co-curricular activities.

Despite these achievements, the school faces several challenges. Limited classrooms, inadequate sanitation, lack of a dining hall, lack if transport means for mobility and soil erosion threaten its holistic approach.

“We are doing our best with the resources we have, but the reality is that we urgently need at least 15 additional classrooms, a dining hall, a staffroom, and an administration block to serve our growing population,” said the head of institution.
