Dr. Nakhumicha Advocates for Strengthening Health, Agriculture, and Education in Trans Nzoia

Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Dr. Susan Nakhumicha, has urged the Trans Nzoia County Government to take a more proactive role in strengthening health, education, and agricultural services.

Dr. Nakhumicha, who is eyeing the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, said the three sectors—which directly touch on residents’ livelihoods—are the most affected.

She made the remarks during an opinion leaders’ consultative forum bringing together leaders allied to the government, held at Kabuyefwe.

On health, the former Cabinet Secretary emphasized the importance of ensuring health facilities are well equipped to guarantee affordable healthcare services to residents.

She urged political and community leaders to take responsibility for registering vulnerable residents who are unable to enroll themselves in universal access to healthcare under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“Leaders have a responsibility to ensure that those who are incapable of registering into SHA are supported,” she said, adding that healthcare facilities must be adequately equipped to meet the needs of wananchi.

In the agriculture sector, she highlighted the plight of smallholder farmers, urging leaders to ensure they are properly captured in the subsidized fertilizer programme.

She noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Trans Nzoia’s economy and that supporting farmers would directly improve household incomes and food security.

Turning to education, Dr. Nakhumicha urged Members of Parliament to prioritize the needy when allocating bursaries, noting that education remains a critical pillar for social and economic transformation in the county.

“No child should miss out on education because of lack of school fees,” she said, calling for transparency and equity in bursary distribution.
