Dr. Wamalwa Ditches Wetang’ula’s Ford Kenya for UDA, Eyes National Party Position

The Chairman of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) National Standards Council, Dr. Chris Wamalwa, has defected from the Ford Kenya party to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing betrayal and a departure from democratic ideals within his former party.

Dr. Wamalwa, who is eyeing the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat, said he made the decision after what he described as repeated frustrations and lack of goodwill from the leadership of Ford Kenya, despite his unwavering support for party leader Moses Wetang’ula during difficult moments, including an attempted coup within the party.

“I was betrayed by Ford Kenya and I can no longer belong there. I have now joined the UDA party, which has national ideals and a broader vision for the country,” Dr. Wamalwa said while addressing supporters during a consultative forum held in Sikhendu.

The former Kiminini Member of Parliament said Ford Kenya has drifted away from its founding principles, adding that he could no longer associate with what he termed as a regional outfit that has abandoned internal democracy.

“Let it be known that Trans Nzoia is not an extension of Bungoma County. Governor Ken Lusaka and Wetang’ula should let us decide on our issues independently,” he said.

Dr. Wamalwa further revealed that he is seeking a national position within the ruling party and intends to challenge the current UDA Secretary General, Hassan Omar, for the post.

“I will be challenging the current Secretary General of UDA, Hassan Omar, for the position of UDA Secretary General,” he announced.

He also pledged to work closely with national government initiatives in the region, saying he would no longer allow himself to be sidelined in development matters affecting Trans Nzoia County.

“There has been a trend where some leaders take credit for national government projects, yet development is a collective responsibility. I will be part and parcel of all national government initiatives in this region,” Dr. Wamalwa said.

His defection is expected to reshape the political landscape in Trans Nzoia County, with analysts viewing the move as a strategic alignment with the ruling party ahead of the next general election.
