The political advisor to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has made a major shift in allegiance, leaving the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) to join President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Werunga, who is eyeing the Kwanza Parliamentary seat, explained that Trans Nzoia has been left out of the national government’s development agenda due to the opposition stance championed by Governor Natembeya.
“How can you stimulate economic development in your county if you keep attacking the national government, which is the number one investor in counties?” Werunga questioned during a consultative forum at Kosoriot in Kwanza Constituency.
He also urged the Luhya community to reject the illusion spread by some opposition leaders that President Ruto would be ousted in the upcoming elections.
“There is power in queuing. The community’s quest for the presidency will be more realistic after five years if it supports President Ruto’s re-election,” Werunga added.
Confident in the growing support for Ruto’s agenda, Werunga predicted that the broad-based alliance in Trans Nzoia would secure more elective seats than the Tawe Movement in the 2027 general elections.
He also challenged Governor Natembeya to step aside for new leadership in Trans Nzoia, encouraging figures like Sr. Chris Wamalwa, Susan Nakhu, and Kakai Bisau to contest for the governorship while Natembeya pursues his presidential ambitions.
Werunga’s defection follows that of Hospital Ward Member of the County Assembly, Eric Wafula, who also recently switched allegiance, further signaling the shifting political dynamics in the region.
