Nakhumicha Makes Historic Bid, Aims to Become Trans Nzoia’s First Woman Governor

Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, Dr. Susan Nakhumicha, has officially announced her bid to make history as the first woman to serve as Governor of Trans Nzoia County.

Dr. Nakhumicha said her tenure as Health Cabinet Secretary, together with her current diplomatic role, has equipped her with the expertise and experience needed to lead and drive development in the county.

“I have the expertise, the networks, and the understanding of how government works. What we need now is leadership that listens, unites, and delivers,” she said.

Speaking during a series of consultative meetings with the Balako, Batachoni, and Babichachi clans, Dr. Nakhumicha—who previously contested the Woman Representative seat in 2022—said she launched her gubernatorial bid after extensive community engagement.

“I am humbled by the confidence the people have in me. They have agreed to support my bid, and I am ready to offer the leadership this county deserves,” she said.

Highlighting healthcare as a major priority, she pledged to improve services at the Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral hospital, among other, noting that access to quality medical services remains “a persistent challenge” in the region.

“Residents should not have to travel long distances for lifesaving treatment. We must fix the health system, and we must do it urgently,” she emphasized.

On land matters, Dr. Nakhumicha promised to fast-track the issuance of title deeds, saying secure land ownership is essential for economic empowerment and community stability.

Others who have declared interest in the gubernatorial seat include former Kiminini MP Dr. Chris Wamalwa and current Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, while incumbent Governor George Natembeya has expressed interest in transitioning to the national political stage.
