President William Ruto has come under scrutiny for launching personal attacks against Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), during his ongoing tour of Western Kenya.
Dan Wafula, a close family member of Eugene Wamalwa, strongly condemned the President’s comments, saying they unfairly targeted the private lives of Wamalwa and his late vice president brother, Wamalwa Kijana.
“It is very disrespectful for the President to demean Eugene in public with false accusations targeting his family and the family of his late brother,” Wafula told journalists in Kitale.
Wafula recalled that this is not the first time President Ruto has criticized Wamalwa publicly, referencing similar remarks made when Ruto served as Deputy President while Wamalwa held a Cabinet position.
“This is not the first time he is attacking Eugene. Even when he was Deputy President and Eugene was serving as a Cabinet Secretary, he made similar remarks,” Wafula stated.
The family also addressed claims questioning Wamalwa’s marital status, emphasizing that he married Lucy Musundi publicly in 1997 at the Immaculate Conception Church Kitale.
“It is not a secret that Wamalwa married Lucy Musundi in 1997 in a ceremony officiated by the retired Bishop of the Kitale Catholic Diocese, Maurice Crowley,” Wafula added.
Wafula further dismissed accusations that Eugene Wamalwa has neglected the children of his late brother, calling such claims false.
“The only family matter is that of land succession that has ended in court, and there is nothing peculiar about that because Eugene is advocating for equal distribution of land to his kids,” he explained.
Questioning the motive behind the repeated public attacks, Wafula urged the President to directly state any grievances he may have with Wamalwa.
“Why Eugene? If there is something we owe you, let it be said openly,” he added.
