Supporters Celebrate High Court Victory for Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya

Supporters of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya hit the streets of towns in Western Kenya to celebrate a High Court ruling that quashed corruption charges previously filed against him.

The jubilant crowds — including traders, boda boda riders, and local residents — began gathering early in the morning following a landmark decision by the High Court of Kenya sitting at Milimani Law Courts.

The court awarded Natembeya KSh 2.5 million in damages after finding that his constitutional rights had been violated during the investigation and arrest process.

Celebrations erupted across Kitale as residents sang, danced, and chanted in support of the governor. Many described the ruling as a victory not only for Natembeya but also for justice and fairness.

“We are here to celebrate the victory of our Governor. This is not just his victory, but a victory for all of us who believe in fair treatment and justice,” said Violet Musera, a vegetable vendor in Kitale.

Local boda boda rider Ronald Wangila also welcomed the court’s decision, urging authorities to avoid politicizing anti-corruption efforts.

“We cannot let every accusation against our leaders turn into a political game. If corruption is a serious issue, then let it be dealt with properly and fairly,” Wangila said.

Another trader, Violet Mwale, expressed hope that the ruling would allow the governor to focus fully on development in the county.

“Governor Natembeya has always been there for us, helping improve the lives of small traders like me. We don’t need distractions; we need progress. Let’s work together and build Trans Nzoia,” she said.

In the ruling, the court determined that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) unlawfully arrested Natembeya on May 20, 2025. The court found that the governor was denied access to legal counsel and that investigators conducted illegal inquiries, including the improper acquisition of his M-Pesa records.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the corruption case filed against Natembeya constituted an abuse of the judicial process. The court also ordered the EACC and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to refrain from initiating further legal action based on the same claims.

Legal experts say the ruling underscores the importance of protecting constitutional rights during investigations and prosecutions.

The court’s decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over political leadership and anti-corruption efforts in Kenya. The KSh 2.5 million compensation awarded to Natembeya reinforces the need for investigative bodies to operate within the limits of the law.

Similar celebrations were witnessed in Bungoma town and Kiminini town, among others, with many residents viewing the outcome as both a personal and political victory for Governor George Natembeya.
