Trans Nzoia County Workers’ Union Heads to the Polls Amid Key Labour Challenges

The Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) Trans Nzoia branch will hold its much-anticipated branch elections this Saturday, with union officials saying all arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth, transparent, and peaceful exercise.

Outgoing Trans Nzoia branch chairman Juma Kiboi confirmed that preparations for the polls have been finalized, urging members to turn out in large numbers and conduct themselves responsibly during the exercise.

“All plans are in place. We urge all voters to remain peaceful as they exercise their democratic right to choose leaders who truly represent the interests of county workers,” Kiboi addressed journalists in his office.

Several leadership positions will be contested during the elections. The seats include chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, women’s representative, and youth representative.

Kiboi emphasized that only registered union members will be allowed to vote, warning that individuals intent on disrupting the process will not be tolerated.

“Anyone who does not have the interests of workers at heart will not be given room. Those who want to cause chaos will be dealt with according to the law,” he stated.

The elections will be overseen by the County Labour Officer, who will serve as the returning officer to guarantee credibility and adherence to labour laws.

The polls come at a time when county workers are grappling with several challenges, including stalled promotions, the continued engagement of casual workers, and what union leaders describe as the county government’s failure to listen to workers’ concerns.

“Promotions have stalled, casuals remain uncertain about their future, and the county government has been adamant despite our engagements,” he said.

Union members are expected to use the elections to usher in new leadership in a quest to push for better terms, permanent employment for casual workers, and improved welfare for county government employees in Trans Nzoia.
