Residents of Hospital Ward in Trans Nzoia have been urged to embrace carbon credit programmes as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation while unlocking new income opportunities at the grassroots level.
Speaking at Kimila Farm during a presidentoal taskforce sensitization on national projects, Metrine Too, the Technical Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah Barasa, described the initiative as a game changer for local communities dollowing the launch of the carbon registry.
“We will organise a public participation programme to enlighten you on the benefits of carbon credit,” said Too, noting that awareness remains key to ensuring successful adoption.
Kenya launched its National Carbon Registry in February 2026 to manage carbon assets, ensure transparency, and comply with Paris Agreement Article 6 rules.
Too emphasized that many environmental conservation and climate change mitigation initiatives are implemented at the community level, making public participation essential.
“The Cabinet Secretary understands the critical role communities play in ensuring that programmes under her ministry succeed,” she added.
She encouraged residents, particularly those living near forest areas, to take advantage of sustainable farming opportunities under the shamba system, provided they strictly adhere to environmental guidelines.
Highlighting the growing importance of the carbon market, Too called on residents to actively participate in carbon credit programmes, noting that they offer both environmental protection and economic benefits through income generation.
She further urged local leaders to ensure that vulnerable and marginalized groups are included in these initiatives, stressing the importance of equitable access.
The advisor also underscored the need to safeguard the rights of forest-dwelling communities in the Cherang’any region, noting that conservation programmes should support their livelihoods while preserving their cultural heritage.
Additionally, Too pointed to ongoing empowerment initiatives targeting widows, aimed at improving household incomes and strengthening social protection among vulnerable populations.
“The Cabinet Secretary is committed to inclusive development that balances environmental protection with community welfare and economic growth,” she said.
