An ongoing security operation in Trans Nzoia County has led to the arrest of 226 individuals, as law enforcement intensifies its efforts to dismantle criminal gangs that have been wreaking havoc in the region.
Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi confirmed that the operation, which began on April 15, is being conducted strictly within the boundaries of the law, with all suspects being processed through the judicial system.
“We are carrying out the operation in the most humane way, and those arrested are being presented before the courts for due process,” said Oyagi during a briefing with journalists in Kitale.
He emphasized that the primary goal of the operation is to restore law and order across the county, particularly in areas plagued by criminal activity.
Oyagi also used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to politicians accused of harboring criminal elements, especially in the slums where insecurity has been escalating.
“It is unacceptable for elected leaders to demand police protection at their public meetings while simultaneously hiring goons for similar purposes,” he said, condemning such contradictory behavior.
The commissioner made it clear that the government will not tolerate anyone who undermines the efforts to restore peace and security.
In addition to the arrests, the police are actively investigating a recent robbery that occurred during a voter registration exercise on April 11 in Kitale. Traders were targeted by a gang that used violence to steal goods and cash.
Authorities have obtained CCTV footage of the suspects involved in the heist, which is expected to play a critical role in tracking down and apprehending the criminals.
“We have gathered crucial evidence and are actively pursuing those involved. They will be brought to justice,” Oyagi stated.
The security operation has also resulted in the recovery of several stolen electronic items, including smartphones, CCTV cameras, televisions, computers, and gas cylinders.
These items are believed to be linked to various theft cases that have recently plagued the town.
While there have been rumors circulating about the imposition of a curfew in Kitale, Oyagi was quick to dismiss them.
“There is no curfew. Residents should continue with their normal activities while remaining vigilant,” he assured the public, urging people to stay calm and cooperative.
The authorities have also called on members of the public to come forward with any information that could help locate criminals who are still at large.
“We urge the public to volunteer information regarding criminal activities or individuals still at large so they can be investigated and arrested,” Oyagi said.
As the operation continues, the county security committee remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.
Authorities have made it clear that their efforts will continue until the criminal networks operating in Trans Nzoia County are completely dismantled.
With the support of local communities and ongoing police work, the people of Kitale and the surrounding areas can expect a safer environment in the weeks ahead.
