The Turkana community in Trans Nzoia County has intensified calls for political inclusion, announcing plans to field candidates in the upcoming general elections.
Community leaders say the move is aimed at securing representation and ensuring equitable access to resources, noting that the Turkana population in the county has grown significantly over the years.
Speaking during a consultative meeting, Chairman Esokon confirmed that the community has already identified aspirants for various elective seats.
“We have our aspirants ready to contest different positions, and they will be on the ballot in the coming elections,” he said.
Vice Chairman Bishop John Esto emphasized the need for recognition, stating that the Turkana community is well established across the county.
“We are here to stay. Our people are spread across all five sub-counties, and we deserve recognition like any other community,” he said.
He added that while the community has yet to decide which candidates to support politically, it is committed to backing its own.
“For a long time, we have supported leaders from other communities. It is now our time to also be elected and represent our people,” he noted.
According to Chairman Esokon, the Turkana community has never produced an elected leader in Trans Nzoia, a situation leaders say must change.
Secretary Joseph Ekodor revealed that the community has an estimated 57,000 voters, a number he said cannot be ignored in local politics.
“Our youth are now more aware and actively engaged in leadership and governance issues. We are calling for increased representation not only in elective seats but also in non-elective positions and in the fair allocation of resources,” he said.
Youth leader Lopeyek James Namron underscored the importance of political participation in shaping development outcomes.
“Politics plays a central role in decision-making, especially in the allocation of resources. We are urging other communities to support us, and we call on political parties to give our candidates equal opportunities,” he said.
The leaders maintained that inclusive leadership and fair representation are critical to fostering unity, equality, and sustainable development in Trans Nzoia as the country prepares for the next elections.
