Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has warned against attempts to divide the county along ethnic lines, urging residents to reject politicians he accused of importing tribal politics into local affairs.
Natembeya said Trans Nzoia’s ethnic diversity should be a source of unity rather than division, as he hosted members of the Sabaot community who visited him to thank him for appointing Luke Naibei as a member of the County Public Service Board.
The governor challenged those accusing his administration of discriminating against the Sabaot community to produce evidence, saying members of the community had benefited from appointments to various government positions.
“There has been a lot of propaganda that the government hates the Sabaot community. I challenge those spreading this propaganda to ask themselves what this community has done that we have failed to do for them,” Natembeya said.
He said the county had appointed members of different communities to senior positions, arguing that his administration had demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity.
Natembeya also cautioned residents against allowing politicians from outside the county to influence local political decisions by exploiting ethnic differences.
“We do not want people coming here to divide us along tribal lines. Trans Nzoia is a beautiful county because of its ethnic composition, and we must continue living together as one community,” he said.
He urged residents to maintain unity despite supporting different political leaders, saying disagreements over politics should not undermine cooperation on issues affecting the county.
Natembeya said his administration had been engaging different communities and would continue holding consultations to strengthen cohesion.
Naibei thanked Natembeya for his appointment, describing it as an important recognition of the Sabaot community and an opportunity to contribute to the county’s public service.
“I want to thank the county government, through His Excellency Governor George Natembeya, for the great opportunity we have been given as the Sabaot community to be represented in the County Public Service Board,” Naibei said.
He said he would use his position to advocate for greater opportunities for young people, urging the youth to prepare for leadership and employment opportunities.
“One of my priorities on the board is to ensure that we have many young people. So, young people, prepare yourselves and embrace leadership,” he said.
Naibei also called on all communities in Trans Nzoia to support the county’s development agenda and work together irrespective of political or ethnic differences.
“This is the leadership that we want—the leadership that brings our people together and ensures that all communities and our children in Trans Nzoia County are supported,” he said.
