Natembeya Accuses Chiefs of Discriminating Residents Over ID Applications

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has accused some chiefs in Cherang’any Constituency of discriminating against residents in the processing of national identity cards on political grounds.

Natembeya alleged that the discrimination targets residents from communities perceived to oppose President William Ruto’s re-election bid, potentially denying them the documents required to register as voters.

“It’s unjust for a government officer to deny some Kenyans the right to own a national identity card just on political grounds,” Natembeya said while speaking at the funeral of Mama Selina Nasimiyu, the mother of his personal assistant, Emmanuel Wamalwa, in Hututu village.

The governor also rallied residents behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid, saying Kenya needs transformative leadership.

“We are against the leadership of President Ruto since he has failed in his mandate and we want to send him packing in 2027,” he said.

Natembeya’s remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition leaders accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of using state institutions to frustrate their supporters.

Cherang’any MP Patrick Simiyu also condemned the recent attack on the Linda Mwananchi caravan in Homa Bay, describing the incident as barbaric.

“It was traumatising learning that leaders, among them Governor Natembeya, were attacked when they were exercising their right to speech and freedom of association,” Simiyu said.

Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale said opposition leaders would not be intimidated in their push for political change.

“We represent the aspirations of many Kenyans and we are not cowed by barbaric acts perpetuated by our opponents,” Mwale said.
