Rights Group Questions Management of Trans Nzoia County Government Vehicles

Rights groups in Trans Nzoia have raised concerns over allegations that some county government vehicles are being used contrary to established procedures, while others involved in past accidents have not been publicly accounted for.

The concerns were raised by the Centre for Transparency and Accountability (CETRA), whose Director Samuel Kiboi called on the county government to explain how its official vehicles are allocated, managed and safeguarded.

Kiboi alleged that some county vehicles were being used in violation of established procedures, while the status of others involved in previous accidents remained unclear.

> “Some county vehicles were being used contrary to established procedures, while others involved in past accidents had not been publicly accounted for,” Kiboi said.

He said the County Secretary, as the head of the county public service, bears responsibility for ensuring government vehicles are allocated and used in accordance with the law.

Kiboi added that the county’s Transport Manager is mandated to safeguard public assets and ensure official vehicles are assigned only to authorised officers.

> “The Transport Manager has a duty to safeguard county assets and ensure government vehicles are only assigned to authorised officers. We are giving the county government seven days to explain the allocation and use of these vehicles,” he said.

Kiboi also questioned the status of several county vehicles involved in accidents, alleging that an ambulance involved in an accident in 2020 and another vehicle involved in a fatal accident in 2017 had not been publicly accounted for.

He urged the county government to publish a comprehensive inventory of all vehicles involved in accidents or currently grounded, saying residents have a right to know how public assets are being managed.

The Trans Nzoia County Government had not responded to the allegations by the time of publication.
